Cancer Really Pisses Me Off!&*%$

2010 Melanoma Militia Fundraising Goal is $2500!
Our first event is June 5th at the Longmont Kids Triathlon.
We need your donations and support!

MAY IS NATIONAL
MELANOMA AWARENESS
MONTH
Skin cancer is on the rise are you at risk?
My Dad Chuck Melvin, was not lucky to “just have skin cancer”. Melanoma skin cancer took his life on July 12, 2009. The images still haunt me today almost a year later. Ignorance is not bliss, it's reckless! Please help us and our public charity Melanoma Militia reach our fundraising goal for 2010. Anyone diagnosed with cancer deserves equal funding, equal research, and equal rights to a timely treatment plan for their type of cancer. My Dad did not get a fair shot at fighting melanoma cancer. A recurrence from 4 yrs prior of Stage II melanoma, something I shared with my Dad as an 8 year survivor myself of Stage II melanoma. Melanoma lacks a successful and timely treatment plan for later stage skin cancer. Treatment of Stage IV melanoma is not intended to extend your life, but rather make you more comfortable in your last days of life…”comfortable” is hardly what I witnessed in my Dads battle against melanoma. It is an aggressive and nasty cancer. Until more research and better treatment plans are available the best defense against melanoma skin cancer is Prevention and Early Detection, which can increase survival rates. Please protect your skin, be smart in the sun and share this blog post with anyone you love, today!
–Shari Ellwanger-8 year melanoma cancer survivor.

1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime

1 person dies in the US alone every hour from melanoma skin cancer

Only 10% of skin cancer diagnoses are hereditary, 90% of the other cases are NOT hereditary. ANYONE is at risk!

There is no such thing as a “SAFE TAN”. Skin Tans in response to damage to the skins DNA from the sun. A tan is the skins attempt to repair sun damage & prevent further injury. And guess what causes wrinkles as you age...sun damage! Please fake it, don't bake it!

Do you know the ABCD’s of melanoma skin cancer?
Examine spots, moles and any lesions on your skin regularly for changes.
Remember the ABCD guide.
Asymmetry—The shape of one half does not match the other

Border—The edges are often ragged, notched, blurred, or irregular in outline; the pigment may spread into the surrounding skin

Color—The color is uneven. Shades of black, brown, and tan may be present. Areas of white, grey, red, pink, or blue also may be seen.

Diameter—There is a change in size, usually an increase. Melanomas are usually larger than the eraser of a pencil (1/4 inch or 5 millimeters).

Melanomas can vary greatly in how they look. Many show all of the ABCD features. However, some may show changes or abnormalities in only one or two of the ABCD features. Some may be non-pigmented and be the same color as your skin (although more rare it is possible).

Melanoma Militia is non-profit charity organized and recognized by the IRS as a 501 (c) 3 public charity. Donations are 100% Tax Deductible.
The Militia is dedicated to raising awareness and teaching prevention and early detection of this deadly skin cancer. In 2009 the Militia participated in over 12 athletic multi-sport races in Colorado spreading the word in communities around Colorado by talking with families, kids and race directors about the importance of practicing safe sun behaviors. We need donations to make the 2010 race season a success. Last year we reached out to over 6500 people in Colorado. Click here for a re-cap of our past events Multisport Team .

Melanoma challenges include a lack of awareness and under-funded research efforts. Breast cancer receives a lot of support and is making huge strides in treatment, research and is saving more lives. That is great news for breast cancer patients. 2009 stats from the National Cancer Institute showed a -2.0% decrease in new breast cancer cases in women & a -1.9% decrease in breast cancer deaths. Melanoma on the other hand is not well researched and is under-funded and does not get the support its patients need in receiving a timely diagnosis and effective treatment plan. 2009 showed a +3.1% increase in new melanoma cases in men and a +2.0% increase in death in men diagnosed with melanoma and a +3.0% increase in new cases of melanoma in women. More than 8600 lives were lost last year to melanoma. Each life lost took away someone's Mom, Dad, Husband, Wife, Son, Daughter, Grandma, Grandpa, Sister, Brother, Cousin, Nephew, Niece, Friend…

Pick a fight!

Even though Melanoma chose to pick a fight with us by calling out my wife (Shari) so thats why we started Melanoma Militia.
All types of cancer have come to battle our friends and family. My father Earl terminal cancer, uncle Butch lost his battle with cancer, aunt Janice breast cancer (lost her battle), friend Karen (Melanoma)...the list goes on and on. I think with all cancers you have to get mad as hell and show it your "war cry" thats why I like this video. It gets me fired up!
I hope it gets you fired up!
Defend a friend or family member. Pick your own fight by donating or entering an event and raise money. Or voluntering with us. To find a way you can help click here

(HELL)th insurance

A cancer diagnosis can be emotionally taxing enough. One thing people don't think about is the life altering change of insurance. If you dont have it there are people that can help. This video is a good tutorial about what you can do. Be a fighter not a victim.
